One of the longest-tenured and most respected administrators in NCAA Division III, Scott Allison retired on June 30, 2023 as Director of Athletics after more than 37 years with the Maroons

Under the supervision of Allison, Maroon teams have won over 100 Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles and 131 NCAA Championship appearances. 

Over the last decade, Allison has overseen an unprecedented expansion of Roanoke College Athletic facilities.  In August of 2016, Roanoke opened the 154,000 square-foot Cregger Center which will house the RC Athletic Department and provide state of the art accommodations for Maroon student-athletes. The new center features a 2,500 seat arena for basketball and volleyball and a field house with a 200-meter indoor track. The athletic portion of the complex also includes a fitness center to be used by the entire community and an athletic training room. 

In 2007, Roanoke opened Donald J. Kerr Stadium which serves as home to the Maroon soccer, field hockey and lacrosse teams. In May of 2016, the turf at Kerr Stadium was upgraded and replaced along with improvements to the public address system.

In addition, Allison brokered an agreement with the City of Salem and the Salem Red Sox in 2015 allowing the Roanoke Baseball team to call Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium its permanent home. Allison also played a key role in the renovation of the RC Tennis Complex on Elizabeth Campus.

A 1991 inductee into the Roanoke Athletic Hall of Fame, Allison served as the head coach of the RC men’s soccer program for 26 years before stepping down from the coaching role at the end of the 2012 season.  During his time on the sidelines, Allison led the Maroons to eight ODAC Championships (1988, 1993, 1994, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2012) and six appearances (1993, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2012) in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  For is efforts, he was named the ODAC Coach of the Year seven times (1988, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012) and Virginia College Division Coach of the Year over four campaigns (1993, 2001, 2002, 2004). Allison was also named the NSCAA Division III South Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year in both 1993 and 2012.

Allison has been a jack-of-all-trades since his return to his alma mater in the summer of 1986. In 1988, Allison guided both the men's soccer and men's lacrosse programs to ODAC Titles and was named ODAC Coach of the Year in both sports.  Allison, who coached the men's lacrosse program for two seasons (1987-88) won back-to-back ODAC Crowns and didn't lose a conference contest.  Both years his team advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including a national semifinalist finish in 1988.  In 1989, under his tutelage, Allison led the women's tennis team to its first winning season in program history (7-3, 6-2 ODAC).

The 2000-01 school year was a bright one for Roanoke Athletics.  With Allison at the helm, the Maroons had the second best winning percentage of small colleges in Virginia.  They were the best of any private institution in the commonwealth.  In 2002, Allison was named the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division III Southeast Region A.D. of the Year.

As a student-athlete, Allison captained both the men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams.  He was a member of Roanoke’s 1978 National Championship Lacrosse team, an all-ODAC and all-region selection in soccer and RC’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1979.

Before returning to Roanoke, Allison was the men’s lacrosse coach and women’s soccer coach at Dartmouth College for three years (1983-85).  Prior to Dartmouth, Allison was an assistant lacrosse coach at the Naval Academy (1982-83), Salisbury University (1981) and Washington College (1980).

A native of Linthicum, MD, Allison earned a master’s degree from Salisbury University in 1987. He currently resides in Salem with his wife Bonnie and has two children, Brooks Allison '11 and Claire Allison '13.
