Richie Waggoner

Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced in June of 2019 the appointment of Richie Waggoner '92 as the Maroons Head Golf Coach and Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. In the fall of 2020, Waggoner took over as the Director of Athletic Communications and held that position for the next two years.

In his first four seasons at the helm of the golf team, the program has moved from 235 in the country to a high ranking of 66th in the 2022-23 campaign. A 3rd place finish at the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Golf Championships, a pair of All-ODAC performers and the 73rd Annual VSGA Intercollegiate Championship are just a few of the accomplishments of the program.

Waggoner, a 1993 graduate of RC, returned to his alma mater after a 13 year stint at nearby Hollins University. In the summer of 2022, Richie returned to Hollins as the Director of Athletic Communications and in July of 2023 was elevated to Assistant Director of Athletics.

Waggoner was named head basketball coach, sports information director, and instructor of physical education at Hollins in the fall of 2006. He stepped down from basketball following the 2009-10 season to build the university's sports information office and is currently the Assistant Director of Athletics, Sports Information Director, and NCAA Compliance Coordinator. During his time on the hardwood, Hollins would see a pair of 1,000 point scorers and one Hall of Fame inductee.

During his first 13 years at Hollins, Waggoner built the Sports Information office, created and launched a new athletics website, and instituted video webcasting for the four, Hollins team sports.  Beginning at the start of the 2014-15 school year, he was named NCAA Compliance Coordinator as well as taking over the duties of sending and receiving game contracts, and has served on several search committees for the department. In the spring of 2018, Waggoner stepped in to serve as interim head tennis coach.

Prior to returning to the Roanoke valley, Waggoner was the head basketball coach at Lynchburg College from 1999-2006. After taking over the struggling program, the Horents ascended to 3rd in the ODAC standings in just this third season. A pair of Hall of Famers and two 1,000 point scorers were recruited during his tenure.

Waggoner previously served as an Assistant Women's Basketball at Roanoke, helping RC Hall of Famer Susan Dunagan lead the Maroons to seven ODAC Championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances which included one Elite Eight and one Sweet Sixteen.

Waggoner has worked for more than 35 years within the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) as a coach and administrator, including over a decade as the color commentator for the ODAC women's basketball tournament while adding the men's tournament duties in 2015, play by play for the ODAC Volleyball Tournament, and assisted in numerous other conference events.  On the national level, Richie has worked the NCAA DIII softball Super Regionals, DII National Softball Championships, DII NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, DIII Men's and Women's Soccer Final Four, DIII Women's Lacrosse Final Four, and served as the site supervisor for the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball Tournament.

Other career highlights include serving as an assistant girls' basketball coach at Roanoke County's Glenvar High School, which won a state championship in 1997.
