Maria Russell is into her first year as an assistant coach with Roanoke field hockey program. Prior to the Maroons, she coached high school field hockey for three seasons at Ursuline Academy in Cincinnati, OH and one season at Laurel in Cleveland, OH.

Maria assists in all facets of the program with a main focus in offense. 

Originally from Hudson, Ohio, she graduated from Ohio University in 2018 with a degree in Early Childhood Education and a masters in Administration. During her field hockey career as a Bobcat, she was a four year starter as a forward where she led the Bobcats in goals. 

In 2014 as a freshman, she was awarded the Gladiator Award.

As a sophomore, Russell was named First-Team All-MAC where she led the Bobcats and the MAC in points during the regular season tallying 12 goals and 3 assists in 2015. She was runner- up Mac Player of the year and was ranked 6th in the nation with goals scored at a time. Russell was awarded Offensive Mac Player and Scholar Athlete of the Week in 2015 and 2017. She made appearances on the Dean's list and was named to the Academic All-Mac Team 2015, 2016 and 2017. 

Russell helped her team appear in three Mac tournaments. In 2016 and 2017, she was awarded Second-Team All Mac and received the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award. She was named Scholar athlete of the week in 2016. Russell was named to the ZAG Field Hockey D1 National Academic Squad in 2016 and 2017. As a senior, she received the Presidential Academic Award in 2017. She ended her career with the Bobcats, totaling 32 goals and 9 assists.
