Mary Kelly ’16 began working within the athletics department in 2020 and in the fall of 2021, was named as the Assistant Throws Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Team. As a graduate of Roanoke College and a three-time ODAC Champion, Kelly has a tremendous amount of firsthand experience within the world of athletics and the Health and Human Performance department.

Graduating with a degree in Health and Physical Education, Kelly became a teacher for a number of years and also served as a Program Manager for the Parks & Recreation Department in New Jersey. After deciding to move back to Virginia to be closer to alma mater, she worked alongside the track and field coaching staff and helped contribute to the success of the team during the 2020-21 seasons. Coach Kelly spent time directing practices, teaching techniques, leading workouts, and fostering a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes.

Kelly’s past as a Roanoke College athlete is rather expansive as she earned the title of ODAC Champion three consecutive years in a row, was named Athlete of the Week, was the school record holder in the Javelin Throw for a number of years, contributed to the success of the team in earning ODAC team titles on four separate occasions, was named to the ODAC All- Academic Team, the Roanoke College Athletic Honor Roll, and was named Female Athlete of the Year in the state of Virginia by VAHPERD (2014). While Kelly’s main event was the Javelin throw, she did compete in the Weight Throw, Hammer, and Discus as well.

Coach Kelly currently resides in Roanoke and spends her time hiking, cooking, and watching movies.
