SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Penn St. Harrisburg, 14-5 at Kiwanis Field Tuesday evening in non-conference action. The Maroons evened its record at 5-5 while the Nittany Lions dropped to 0-2.
The Maroons scored a season-best 14 runs on the night along with 14 hits, which is the second-highest of the year in their first win over PSU-Harrisburg. Eight different players collected at least a hit, four with multi-hit games.
Roanoke got off to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Graham Thacker (Forest, VA, Jefferson Forest)singled and was brought home off an Alan Moore (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)double to take the early advantage. In the bottom of the second, Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River)had a two-RBI double to highlight a four-run inning.
After PSU-Harrisonburg scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Roanoke answered with another four-run inning to push its lead to, 9-2, and cruised to victory.
Moore, who started his 100th career game for Roanoke, finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. He is now third all-time in runs scored with 71. Barrett Henderson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spirng)went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Travalini was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Thacker collected two hits, scored a run and drove in another.
Mark Wimmer (Salem, VA, Salem)(1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, allowing two runs in five innings of work with five strikeouts. John Terlesky (Charlottesville, VA , Albermarle)struck out four batters in three innings of relief.
The men will host Bluefield College tomorrow at Kiwanis Field at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
