SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke dropped two games to Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at Kiwanis Field. The Maroons fell 10-3 in game one, followed with a 17-6 decision in the twin bill. The Maroons fall to 7-10 overall, 3-4 in ODAC play.
In game one, Virginia Wesleyan put up eight of their 10 runs in the first two innings in the 10-3 win. Cody Kidd (Salem, VA, Glenvar)(3-2) took the loss, but Tyler Grouten (Avon, CT, Avon)came in relief to strike out five and allowed only two runs in 5.2 innings.
Graham Thacker (Forest, VA, Jefferson Forest)finished 2-for-4, while Noah Davidson (Salem, VA, Salem)went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run. Barrett Henderson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spirng)went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
In the twin bill, the Maroons couldn't overcome seven unearned runs off three errors and seven home runs allowed in a 17-6 defeat. The Marlins improved its record against the Maroons to 16-1. The Maroons left 11 runners on base for the game.
Michael Haslam (Collegeville, PA, Springfield), (1-2) took the loss for Roanoke. Chris Caputo (Dunwoody, GA, Dunwoody)relieved Haslem, going five innings with five strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Jani Kamphuis (Warrentown, VA, Fauquier)struck out the side in the final inning.
Jay Laramore (Pfafftown, NC, Guilford)had a single, hit a solo home run and drove in two runs to lead Roanoke. Alan Moore (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)hit a double and a triple with two RBI. Caylen Baire (St. Albans, WV, St. Albans)had an RBI-double with a run scored and two walks.
The men return to action on Wednesday, March 24 as they take on Averett University in non-conference action. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Field.
