For the first time in the 10-year history of Roanoke Baseball, the Maroons swept the conference player and pitcher of the week for the ODAC. Freshman slugger Jacob Clifton and sophomore pitcher Michael Haslem were named ODAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively on Monday evening. They are the first players to garner the weekly honor since 2007 (Chase Davidson) and the first field player since the 2004 season (Sean Sturgill). It's the third and fourth player in program-history to earn this award.
Clifton, from Vinton, Va., led the Maroons to four victories last week, including a three-game sweep of Southern Vermont over the weekend. Clifton had a hit in each of RC's five games, racking up a trio of multi-hit efforts. His best outing came in the week's final contest when Clifton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a pair of doubles, a homer and three runs batted in. For the week, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with six runs, four doubles, a homer and seven RBI.
Haslam, from Collegeville, Pa., went 2-0 last week, posting a complete-game victory against Southern Vermont and a two-inning relief stint for the win against Maine-Presque Isle. Against Southern Vermont, Haslam allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and fanning nine over seven innings. Earlier in the week, he worked two scoreless innings to earn the win against M-PI. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
Roanoke, now 6-6 on the season, is riding a four-game win-streak which ties a program-record. The Maroons went 4-1 last week, falling to Averett, 5-4 in a tough loss where the final out was made at the plate. RC rebounded with a 6-0 win over Maine-Presque Isle and swept a three-game series with Southern Vermont.
The men will travel to Ashland, VA this weekend to take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon in their ODAC-opener. Game time is scheduled for noon.
