Maroons Drop ODAC Tournament Opener to Bridgewater, 3-1
LYNCHBURG – The Roanoke College baseball team fell in the opening game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday, 3-1.  The Maroons now have a record of 18-20, while the Eagles sit with a mark of 29-9.
 
With today's game, the Maroons played in their first ODAC Tournament game since 2004.  Roanoke finished the regular season with a mark of 18-19 and 10-10 in the ODAC, earning the #6 seed.  On April 13th, the Maroons handed the Eagles their only loss of the ODAC regular season, 11-6.  The Maroons will go on to play Friday at 11:00 AM, against the loser of the Randolph-Macon/Hampden-Sydney game.
 
The Maroons got off to a hot start in the first inning, with Brian Kluge opening the inning with a standup double to right field.  After a shallow single by Bradley Mattox, Kluge advanced to third base.  The Maroons then put on a double steal, allowing Mattox to take second and Kluge to home, giving Roanoke the 1-0 lead.
 
Roanoke got in a tight spot in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Bridgewater loaded the bases with two outs.  However, Jacob McMillan got the Maroons out of the jam, keeping Roanoke ahead 1-0 after four innings.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Eagles rallied to score three runs in the frame.  Andrew Hacker led off with a walk, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt, wild pitch then scored on a passed ball.  A few batters later Zach Hines hit a two RBI double, plating two runners and giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
 
The Maroons were led in hitting by Brian Kluge and Clark Crutchfield, who each went 2-4 on the afternoon.  Roanoke's only other hit came from Bradley Mattox.  Jacob McMillan was tabbed with the loss, giving up two runs off three hits in 5.1 innings of work, also striking out six.
 
The Eagles also only put up five hits on the afternoon, led by Christian Armstrong, who went 2-3 on the afternoon.  Zach Hynes finished with one hit along with two RBIs.  Corey Armentrout pitched the complete game, giving up just one run off five hits and striking out nine.
 
The Maroons return to action on Friday, April 26th as they play either Randolph-Macon or Hampden-Sydney.  That contest is scheduled for a 11:00 AM first pitch.
