Roanoke Sweeps R/V Frostburg State on Opening Day of 2017

Game 1
The Basics

Score: Roanoke 10, Frostburg State 7
Records: Roanoke 1-0, Frostburg State 0-1
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke got three hits and three RBI from Sean Guida to rally from an early five run deficit and top Frostburg State 10-7 in the season-opener for both teams.

How it Happened

  • FSU took advantage of a run scoring wild pitch, a bases loaded walk and a two out error to score five runs on just two hits in the visitor half of the second inning to go up 5-0.
  • Drew Mikula started the Maroons second inning with a double then came around to score when Collier Donald delivered a two-out RBI single.
  • In the third inning, Will Black singled to lead off the inning and Guida followed with a triple to left-center field to make it a 5-2 game. Guida would later score on a wild pitch to make it 5-3 FSU.
  • RC pulled within one run in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with no outs and Joe Kitlas came home to score following a groundball double play.
  • Donald walked to open the seventh inning and moved to second when Dan Brodeur was hit by a pitch. Each runner moved up on a bunt and Donald would score on a wild pitch to make it 6-5 Maroons. Later in the inning, Brodeur scored on an error by Frostburg State during a pickoff attempt of Black at first base. Black then scored on a two-out single by Craig Kiley to make it 8-5.
  • In the Maroons eighth, Joe Kitlas struck out to lead off the inning but reached first on a wild pitch on strike three and moved to second on a passed ball. Will Decker followed with a triple to plate Kitlas to make it 9-5 before Decker scored on a sacrifice fly to put RC up 10-5.
  • In the ninth inning, Frostburg State pushed across two runs and had the tying run at the plate but Kiley took the mound and recorded the final two outs for the save.
  • Matt Henderlite got the win for RC after tossing 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out two.

Score: Roanoke 4, Frostburg State 3
Records: Roanoke 2-0, Frostburg State 0-2
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Matt Franklin allowed just two earned runs over six innings as Roanoke topped FSU 4-3 to sweep the doubleheader.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke struck first getting three runs in the second inning when Kiley got hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second when Decker singled. After the pair moved up a base on a bunt by Donald, Sam Watson singled to plate them both to make it 2-0.  Watson moved to third following a botched pickoff attempt and scored on a Dean Hermanson single to make it 3-0.
  • In the Frostburg third inning, Evan Colon and JT Tipton recorded back-to-back singles with one out. Greg Scneider then singled and the ball was misplayed in the RC outfield allowing Colon to score to make it 3-1. Brad Garrant followed with a single to plate Tipton to make it 3-2.
  • Decker tripled with one out in the third inning and scored to make it 4-2 when he was singled home by Donald.
  • FSU cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with one out but were kept off the board by Maroon relievers Cameron Eck and Steven Loney who got the final two outs to keep it a one run RC lead.
  • Kiley allowed a two-out single in the ninth but got Garrant to pop out in foul territory to end the game and notch his second save of the day.
  • Lane Ward took the loss for FSU after going 4.2 innings and giving up four runs and striking out three. Franklin got the win for RC, allowing four hits and two runs both of which were unearned.
