The Lead: Roanoke stormed back from an early seven run deficit to take a 13-9 road win at Averett on Wednesday afternoon.
How it Happened
- Craig Kiley went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a save on the mound for the Maroons. Will Decker picked up two triples and three RBI as well for the Maroons. Collier Donald had three hits and scored three runs and Sean Guida had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
- Chase McKinney had three hits for the Cougars, while A.J. Hart drove in three runs for AU.
- Down 7-0 in the third inning, Guida started the comeback with an one-out triple and scored when Donald followed with an RBI single. Decker tripled home Donald and scored on a passed ball to make it 7-3.
- Donald opened the RC fifth with a single and Decker reached on an error, setting up a two RBI double by Kiley to make it 7-5. The next batter, Drew Mikula, plated Kiley with a double to make the score 7-6.
- Averett got two runs back in the sixth following back-to-back doubles by Dallas Smithers and McKinney and a Hart RBI ground out to make it 9-7.
- The Maroons loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning before a Ross Strickland pinch-hit RBI walk made it 9-8. Roanoke got sacrifice flies from Sam Watson and Dean Hermason later in the inning to tie the game 9-9.
- In the decisive eighth inning, Guida led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Donald then walked to set up Decker for a two-run, go head triple to push RC in front 11-9 before a Kiley infield single plated Decker to make it 12-9.
- AU loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth but Kiley got a ground out to end the threat.
- The Cougars put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth with one out but Kiley preserved the win, striking out McKinney to end the game.
- Rawlings Cumbea (0-1) threw one inning of hitless relief to earn the win, while Hart (0-1) took the loss in relief for AU. Kiley's save was his third of the season.
Up Next: Roanoke will hit the road this weekend for a doubleheader with Greensboro on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon.
