Roanoke Sweeps Greensboro to Improve to 5-1

Game 1
The Basics
Score: Roanoke 10, Greensboro 9
Records: Roanoke 4-1, Greensboro 5-1

The Lead: Roanoke scored nine runs in the ninth inning to rally from a seven run deficit and take a 10-9 win over Greensboro in game one.

How it Happened

  • With two outs in the top of the fifth inning and Greensboro up 3-0, Sean Guida singled with one out and Collier Donald followed with a double to make the score 3-1 GC.
  • The Pride would come back and get a pair of runs back in the home half of the fifth then a  Zach Neumeister three-run homer in the sixth inning made it 8-1 Greensboro.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Maroons loaded the bases with one out before a Guida single made the score 8-2.
  • After the Maroons scored single runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball to make it 8-4, Donald walked and Will Decker was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again.
  • Craig Kiley then delivered a bases clearing double down the left field line that scored Guida, Donald and Decker to make it an 8-7 game.
  • Kiley moved to third on a wild pitch and came home to score the tying run when Will Black delivered an RBI single.
  • Dean Hermanson reached on an infield single which moved Black to third before Sam Watson singled Black home to give RC a 9-8 lead.
  • Devin Cassity followed with an RBI bunt single to plate Hermanson to make it a 10-8 game.
  • Greensboro rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Michael Faul led the inning off with a single and Dillion Cox walked. The runners moved up on a balk then Derek Jarr drove home pinch runner Jacob Rodriquez to make it a one run game.
  • With runners on first and third, Nick Raulin got Edward Milian to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
  • Ian Schweppe got the win for RC tossing three innings of relief. Raulin picked up the save for the Maroons.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 5, Greensboro 3
Records: Roanoke 5-1, Greensboro 5-2
Location: Greensboro, N.C.

The Lead: A Cody Shell two RBI double in the ninth inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent RC to a 5-3 win over Greensboro.

How it Happened

  • Donald got RC on the board first with a two-out RBI double that scored Guida and made it 1-0 Maroons in the third inning.
  • Greensboro took the lead in the next half inning when Kristopher Taveras hit a two-run homer with two outs.
  • Roanoke was down 3-2 in the eighth inning when Guida tripled with one out and Donald followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 3-3.
  • In the decisive top of the ninth, Ross Strickland walked after the first two batters had been retired. Strickland then moved to third on a Hermanson single. 
  • Shell followed with a double to score the pair and Kiley retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for the save for RC.
  • Matt Henderlite got the win in relief for RC to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Willis Booth took the loss for GC, evening his record at 1-1.
