The Lead: Powered by a seven run first-inning, Roanoke topped Southern Virginia 13-4 Wednesday afternoon in Salem.
How it Happened:
- Roanoke got all the runs it would need in the first inning scoring seven times on six hits.
- With RC up 3-0 and the bases loaded, Joe Kitlas drove in all three runners with a bases clearing double to make it 6-0 Roanoke. Scott Ellis then drove in Kitlas to make it a 7-0 game.
- In the Maroon second inning, Craig Kiley doubled to start the inning then came around to score on a two-out single by Kitlas that made it 8-1.
- The Maroons led 9-1 in the sixth inning before RC loaded the bases and got back-to-back RBI doubles from Dean Hermanson and Scott Ellis to go up 13-1.
- Ellis finished the game 3-fo-4 with three RBI on the day. Kitlas, Will Black and Sean Guida all had a pair of hits on the day. Kitlas finished with four RBIs as well.
- Jordan Keefer finished with two hits for SVU. Ryan Saunders hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning for SVU.
- Forrest Wagner got the win for Roanoke to improve to 1-1 on the season.
