Baseball Sweeps Susquehanna in Saturday Showdown

Game One

The Lead: Collier Donald hit a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth to lift RC to an 8-7 victory in game one.

How it Happened:

  • Donald, Will Decker and Eli Sumpter each recorded two hits in the contest while Susquehanna was led by Nick Berger who went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI.
  • Sal Trancucci earned the win with 3.0 innings of work allowing only two hits and one run, moving to 3-0 on the season. Liam Conboy was credited with the loss giving up five hits and one run. 
  • Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Roanoke tied it up as Sean Guida scored on a River Hawk throwing error. Two batters later, Dan Brodeur walked with the bases loaded and helped RC take a 2-1 lead. Another Susquehanna error brought in two more runs for the Maroons before Cody Shell drove in Brodeur with a single to close the inning with the score 5-1 in favor of RC.
  • Susquehanna answered with a pair of runs in the fourth with a double from Berger and a single from Anthony Dombrowski cutting the deficit to 5-3. 
  • In the top of the sixth, SU tied the game with an RBI from Berger followed by a bases-loaded walk for Zach Leone making it 5-5.
  • SU took the lead in the seventh as Berger drove in a run with a single up the middle before Nick Marini drove in another run for a 7-5 River Hawk lead.
  • In the Maroon eighth, Drew Mikula sparked back-to-back runs for Roanoke with a single up the middle plating Guida. Decker followed suit with a single to bring home Mikula and tie the game 7-7.
  • After Trancucci struck out two in the top of the ninth, Sumpter led off the bottom of the inning with a single down the left field line. Shell pushed Sumpter to second with a bunt, Will Black hit an infield single and Donald drove in Sumpter with a walk-off single to left field sealing the 8-7 win.

Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: John Ruhlman allowed only six hits en route to an 8-1 complete game win in game two.

How it Happened:

  • Ruhlman moved to 1-0 on the season allowing only one run while striking out six. Ryan Beckwith was tabbed with the loss giving up four runs and seven hits.
  • Joe Kitlas and Donald led RC with two RBI, while Guida and Sumpter each recorded three hits. SU's Cory Fallon went 3-for-4, while Berger had one RBI.
  • RC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Black and Guida started off the inning with back-to-back singles before Black scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Maroons tacked on two more runs in the third as Kitlas doubled to left field scoring Donald. In the next at bat, a Sumpter single scored Kitlas making it a 3-0 game. 
  • In the fourth, Black doubled and Guida ripped a triple to center, bringing in two more runs for the Maroons.
  • SU scored its only run of the game in the seventh as Berger drove in Fallon with a double making it 5-1 RC.
  • Roanoke responded with three runs as Mikula ripped a one-out triple and Kitlas drove him in with a single. Kitlas scored on a wild pitch and Sumpter scored on a River Hawk infield error to extended the RC lead to 8-1.
