The Basics
Score: Roanoke 8, Emory & Henry 2
Records: No. 21 Roanoke 18-7 / 4-4 ODAC | Emory & Henry 12-14 / 3-4 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.
The Lead: Eli Sumpter tossed a complete game to lead Roanoke to an 8-2 ODAC win over Emory & Henry Tuesday night.
How it Happened:
- Sumpter (2-0) went the distance allowing just six hits and surrendered two runs. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
- In the bottom of the third, Scott Ellis opened the inning with a single then stole second. Sean Guida followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Dean Hermanson singled to plate Ellis and make it 1-0, before Craig Kiley singled home Guida to double the RC advantage.
- Roanoke loaded the bases later in the inning and Drew Mikula delivered a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-0 game. A Will Decker single scored Kiley and made it 4-0 Maroons.
- The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth inning when Will Black doubled to open the inning and went to third on a wild pitch. Mikula then followed with an RBI single to plate Black and put RC up 5-0.
- Roanoke tacked on a run in the seventh inning to go up 6-0. E&H would capitalize on a pair of RC errors to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
- The Maroons got those two runs back in next half inning on a Decker RBI single that scored Black and Hermanson to make it 8-2.
- Hermanson finished 4-for-5 for RC, while Decker was 3-for-5 with three RBI.
- Ben Sexton had three hits for Emory & Henry, while Nick Lesnak took the loss, dropping his record to 2-4.
