RC Baseball Splits with H-SC on Senior Day

The Basics

The Lead: Hampden-Sydney took a 3-2 decision over the Maroons in game one of the ODAC doubleheader.

How it Happened 

  • H-SC's Dustin Wiles was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then moved to second a sacrifice bunt. He later came around to score on an RBI double by Brian Goodwyn to make it 1-0 Tigers.
  • Later in the inning, H-SC would load the bases and scored the second run of the game when RC starter John Ruhlman balked home a run.
  • The score stayed 2-0 until the Roanoke fourth inning where Drew Mikula singled with one out and moved to second when Will Black walked. Eli Sumpter singled home Mikula to make it 2-1, while Black would come home to score later in the inning on a Scott Ellis sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
  • H-SC got what proved to be the game-winning run in the next half inning when Jacob Fontana led off the inning with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on an RBI groundout by Wiles.
  • RC attempted to rally in the ninth inning when Collier Donald singled with two outs but H-SC reliever Jonathan Triesler got Sean Guida to fly out to end the game and preserve the win.
  • Triesler went 3.1 innings to pick up the save after giving up just two hits. H-SC starter Chase Mayberry improved to 4-0 on the season after giving up four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Ruhlman (1-3) took the loss for RC giving up five hits and three runs, while striking out eight in 7.2 innings of work.

Records: Roanoke 19-8, 5-5 ODAC | Hampden-Sydney 15-11, 4-4 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke earned a doubleheader split after rallying from an early deficit and coming away with a 4-3 walk-off win over Hampden-Sydney.

How it Happened

  • H-SC scored a pair of runs in the second inning to go up 2-0 before a Devin Daugherty double scored Cody Smith to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning.
  • Roanoke rallied in the fifth inning when Ellis and Donald walked to reach base and Will Decker tripled to bring them both home and make it a 3-2 game.
  • Decker would tie the game two batters later when he came in to score on a Mikula sacrifice fly, making it 3-3.
  • The game stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth inning where Black walked with one out, stole second and moved to third on passed ball. After Mikula walked, Black was able to score the game winning run on a wild pitch to give RC the walk-off win.
  • Craig Kiley (1-0) got the win for RC out of the bullpen after tossing two innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Kiley, Kenny Mackovic and Forrest Wagner combined to give up just four hits in six innings of relief for the Maroons. 
  • Jayson Maitland took the loss for H-SC after entering the game in the ninth inning and surrendering the winning run, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season.
