The Lead: Four Roanoke pitchers held Averett to four hits as the Maroons topped the Cougars 7-2 on Tuesday night in Salem.

How it Happened:

  • Averett got on the board in the first inning when Chip Granderson led off the game with a single. He then stole second, moved to third on a ground out and came home on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Cougars.
  • In the Roanoke third inning, Sam Watson doubled with one out and scored two batters later when Sean Guida doubled to tie the game.
  • After Collier Donald was hit by a pitch, Will Decker doubled to score Guida and give RC a 2-1 lead. Craig Kiley followed with a double of his own scoring both Donald and Decker to make it 4-1.
  • The first two batters in the Roanoke fourth inning were retired before Scott Ellis walked and Guida singled. Both were driven home by Donald to put Roanoke out in front 6-1.
  • With the score 6-2, RC tacked on another run in the eighth inning on a Decker bases loaded single that plated Dean Hermanson.
  • Roanoke starter Rawlings Cumbea (2-0) allowed just the one hit to Granderson to start the game then set down 14 in a row and 15 of the final 16 batters he faced before exiting after five innings. Michael Mares, Matt Henderlite and Cameron Eck allowed one hit each out of the bullpen for RC.
  • Dillon Roberts took the loss on the mound for Averett, working three innings and giving up four runs on five hits.
  • It marks the second time in program history Roanoke has reached the 20 win mark. RC won a school record 23 games in 2016.
