The Lead: Eighth-seed Roanoke knocked off top-seed Oswego State 8-7 Friday afternoon in the second game of the 2017 NCAA Division III Baseball World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The Maroons advance to play Washington & Jefferson at 2:15 p.m. EST on Saturday. The Presidents defeated Concordia-Chicago 4-2 in the day's opening game.

The win gives RC its 34th victory of the season and marks the first win for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference team in the Division III Baseball World Series.

How it Happened

  • Oswego State scored a pair of runs in the first inning before the Maroons bounced back in the second inning, getting back-to-back singles from Scott Ellis and Drew Mikula with one out. Will Black followed with a double to plate both runners and tie the game. Black moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Eli Sumpter and scored to give RC the lead following a Sean Guida single to make it 3-2.
  • In the Roanoke third inning, Will Decker led off with a single and moved to third on a one out single by Ellis. Decker would score to make it 4-2 on an RBI single by Mikula.
  • The Lakers rallied to take the lead in the fourth inning, using four hits to score four runs, taking a 6-4 lead on a Eric Hamilton RBI single with two outs.
  • A Dean Hermanson solo home run to start the fifth inning made it 6-5.
  • Roanoke scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning, putting runners on first and third with one out for Collier Donald whose sacrifice fly brought home Black to tie the game at 6-6. Later in the inning, Decker had a two-out RBI single to score Guida and put RC in front 7-6.
  • RC tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning when Guida was hit by a pitch to open the frame, moved to second on a Donald bunt and scored on a two-out single by Hermanson.
  • Oswego State loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning and pushed a run across on a Zach Kollar sacrifice fly to make it an 8-7 game with two outs. That would be as close as the Lakers would get as Rawlings Cumbea got Eli Holton to fly out to Guida in right field and end the game.
  • Cumbea picked up his fifth save of the season after recording the final two outs. Sal Trancucci earned the win in relief after tossing 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one run, improving his record to 7-2 on the season. Tim Cronin took the loss, dropping his record to 9-2 on the year. The right-hander gave up seven runs on 12 hits.
  • Black finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for RC. Guida and Ellis each had three hits, while Hermanson and Mikula each had a pair.
