The Basics
Game 1

Score: Hampden-Sydney 7, Roanoke 2
Records: Maroons 7-6, 0-1 ODAC | Tigers 8-3, 1-0 ODAC
Location: Farmville, Va.

The Lead: In their first ODAC game of the season, Roanoke would see the Tigers put up three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away late.

How it Happened:

  • A two-run double would stake HSC to a 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.
  • Single runs in the third and again in the sixth would see the Tigers stretch their advantage to 4-0.
  • RC would cut the deficit in half after a two-run seventh. After a pair of strikeouts, Cale Agee reached on a Hampden-Sydney error. Will Merriken doubled to left center to give RC runners at second and third. Mason Staz came through with a two-out, single to left, plating Agee and Merriken.
  • The game would remain 4-2 until the bottom of the eighth when the Tigers would score three runs on two hits with the big blow coming via a three-run home run by Ryan Clawson.
  • Gavin Kandrick went 2-3 with a walk while Merriken was a perfect, 1-1, with a run scored. Staz was 1-3 with both RC RBI. On the mound, Evan Parks got the start, suffering his first loss of the season (2-1).

The Basics
Game 2

Score: HSC 3, Roanoke 2
Records: Maroons 7-7, 0-2 ODAC | Tigers 9-3, 2-0 ODAC
Location: Farmville, Va.

The Lead: Hamden-Sydney would build a lead and hold off a late RC rally to sweep the double header at home.

How it Happened:

  • Game two would start the same as the opener, with the Tigers racing out to an early, 2-0, lead thanks to a one out, two-run, single.
  • The top of the fourth would see Merriken single to center in advance of a PK Cocolis double to left center, cutting the HSC lead in half.
  • The Tigers would add to their advantage in the top of the fifth. Back to back singles would place runners on the corner and a sacrifice fly would allow the home team to push its lead back to two.
  • The game would remain 3-1 until RC rallied in the top of the ninth. Hunter Andrews and Staz would register back-to-back singles to give RC a pair of baserunners. A wild pitch would put the tying runs in scoring position. Carson McCusker plated Andrews on a fielder's choice. However, with two outs, the Tigers closer would induce a game ending, ground out to second to end the Maroon's rally.
  • Merriken added three more hits on the day, going 3-4 in the second game. Staz was 2-4 while Andrews came off the bench posting a hit and run in his only at bat.
  • Will Turner and Chris Dudley gave up just five hits and one run in a combined six innings of relief.

Up Next: Wednesday will see Roanoke travel to Greensboro to face the Pride before returning home next Saturday for an ODAC double header with Washington and Lee.
