The Lead: Roanoke went on the road for the final time this regular season when they made the trip to North Carolina to face Guilford on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons rallied to defeated the Quakers in Salem back in late March and went looking for the season sweep and their 10th Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the season.  Roanoke took the lead with four runs in the top of the second and built an 11-2 advantage. Four in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the ninth allowed the Quakers to close the gap, but Roanoke picked up their 10th ODAC win of the season, 14-8.

Highlights:

  • Jonny Wall hit a solo home run with one-out in the top of the second. Will Smith doubled and would score on a Mason Staz base hit. Staz came around and crossed the plate on a double by Ty Staz and the younger Staz would score on a Jacob Bonzon single down the right field line.
  • Staz (Ty) doubled and would score when the reigning ODAC Player of the Week Conner Butler delivered a double. Butler made it 6-0 when he scored off an Owen Lawn base hit.
  • Smith added to the lead when he scored on a Staz (Mason) sacrifice fly. One inning later, Roanoke would make it 11-2. Bonzon singled, stole second and scored on another Butler RBI. Lawn walked and advanced when Butler scored off a PK Cocolis single to left. Wall was hit by a pitch and after an unearned run crossed the plate, Staz (Mason) delivered another SAC fly to make it a nine-run advantage.
  • The home team would cut into the RC lead with four of their own in the bottom of the sixth but wouldn't score again until their final at bat of the afternoon.
  • Two more runs in the eighth and a Troy Ferrell RBI in the ninth, were more than enough runs for the Maroons as they completed the season sweep of Guilford, 14-8.
  • Butler was 3-6 with three runs and three RBI while six Maroons would record two hits apiece. Mason Staz had three RBI with Ty Staz and Butler adding two doubles each.
  • Jackson Murphy got his third win of the season by going the first five innings. Braeden Farrell was followed by Ryan Cloude and Alex Markus

Up next: Roanoke will play host to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday to wrap up ODAC play this regular season. The first game is scheduled to start at noon with the graduating seniors being honored in between games.
