The Lead: Roanoke played host to Mary Washington in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles scored first before 10 unanswered Maroon goals would give RC a 10-1 lead at the break. The second half would be more tightly contested but in the end Roanoke pulled away for the 19-7 win.
How it Happened:
- Less than two minutes into the game, UMW netted the first score of the afternoon.
- Roanoke would answer quickly when George Gilbert scored off a feed from Luca Docking. 30 seconds later, Docking would give Roanoke the lead for good.
- Bryson Miller made it 3-1 off an assist by Luke Kammerman.
- RC would add a pair of goals a man up, both scored by Wyatt Whitlow, giving the Maroons a 5-1 edge after one period of play.
- Gilbert added his second goal of the game when he beat the Eagle keeper after being set up by Owen Curry. After an Ethan Caldwell goal, Curry would add a score of his own.
- Whitlow and Carson Peck would make it 10-1 at the half.
- Roanoke would add three more scores during the third frame on goals by Caldwell, Gilbert, and Curry.
- Five more unanswered scores to start the fourth quarter would allow RC to pull away.
- Matt Federau recorded nine saves, picking up his fourth win of the season.
- Whitlow and Caldwell each had four goals with Gilbert scoring three while Kammerman handed out six of the Maroons 14 helpers.
Up Next: Roanoke will be back in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Virginia Wesleyan to Kerr Stadium for a 2:30 start.
