The Lead: The 2022 Roanoke College men's lacrosse season got underway today when the Maroons traveled to Christopher Newport for their opener. The Captains raced out to a 5-1 lead in the opening period and built on their advantage for a 13-2 halftime lead. The second half would see Christopher Newport continue to build their lead throughout and closed out the Maroons with a 22-5 victory.
How it Happened:
- The home team scored less than one-minute into the game for the early edge. CNU would score twice more before Ethan Caldwell took a pass from behind the net from Luke Kammerman to get the Maroons on the board. However, Newport would add two more markers to close out the first period with a 5-1 advantage.
- The Roanoke offense was held in check as the Captains would continue to build onto their advantage with a 6-0 start to the second frame. George Gilbert stopped the CNU run, but only briefly as Christopher Newport led 13-2 at the break.
- Caldwell scored off an assist from Gilbert to start the second half and Jay Frye added his first score of the season but the Maroons still trailed, 20-4, heading into the fourth quarter.
- Gilbert added a goal in the closing minute but at the final horn, Roanoke had fallen, 22-5, in their season debut.
- Gilbert and Caldwell each had a pair of scores while helping on a third. Taylor Lewis went the distance in goal, recording 20 saves on the afternoon.
