The Lead: The Roanoke men's lacrosse team returned home from Spring Break this afternoon and earned a 13-11 win over the Eagles of Mary Washington.
Highlights:
- The Eagles scored first in the 2nd minute, but the Maroons responded with two unassisted goals by Luke Kammerman to take the lead. UMW tied the score less than a minute after Roanoke took the lead, but once again the Maroons answered with two unassisted goals, this time by Sean Kennedy, to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
- Just nine seconds into the period, the Eagles cut the Roanoke lead to one, but three straight goals including two in less than a minute gave the Maroons a 7-3 lead with just over three minutes until halftime. UMW would cut down that lead to three with a goal at 00:30 before the break.
- The Roanoke lead was down to just one less than two minutes into the second half, but a man-up goal by Wyatt Whitlow put the lead back to two. After an Eagles goal just 13 seconds later, the Maroons scored twice at 9:18 and 7:55 to once again expand their lead back to three. However, UMW scored three unanswered goals to end the period as the teams headed into the fourth quarter tied at 10-10.
- Matthew Albertson and Kammerman both scored to start the fourth quarter to put the Maroons back on top. The Eagles would score an unassisted goal at 1:25 to get within one, but Luca Docking took a pass from Kammerman and fired an empty net shot with two seconds left to provide for the final 13-11 win margin for Roanoke.
- Kammerman led the offense with four goals and an assist while Kennedy was right behind with three goals.
- Weston Hammond helped lead the defense with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Matt Jahries finished the game with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
