Rouhana's last-second goal advances Maroons to ODAC Championship

Salem, Va. --- Michael Rouhana scored with four-seconds left to defeat Hampden-Sydney, 2-1 at Kerr Stadium this evening. With the win, Roanoke advances to the ODAC Championship and a chance to defend its crown. The Tigers end its season at 11-6-1 while the Maroons improved to 14-3-2.
Rouhana scored from the top of the 18' box and scored off the crossbar for arguably one of the best finishes in ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament history. It ended a match that was very physical, but a great atmosphere as the stadium was packed for this ODAC Semifinal.
The Maroons, who are now 9-0-1 since falling to Randolph-Macon on Oct. 1, fell behind late in the second half after playing solid defensive soccer throughout the match. Hampen-Sydney's Bryan Hughes found Bryan Wharton cross-field and shot over goalkeeper Adam Thompson to give them a 1-0 advantage with less than 13-minutes remaining.
Just as the tide seemed to change, it turned just as quick as Kayvon Sarmadi was fouled in the box which led to a penalty kick. Chris Collins missed the first opportunity, but the goalkeeper was called for jumping off the line. He converted on the second try and tied the contest, 1-1 with less than eight-minutes remaining for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. He has scored eight goals since he moved to the midfield after the Randolph-Macon loss.
The Maroons held slim advantages on shots, 10-9 and corner kicks, 5-3. John Robert Plyler finished with five saves for the Tigers while Thompson had three for Roanoke.
The 14 wins this season are the most since the 2002 season (18). The Maroons are now 8-2-1 at home this season and 16-4-1 at Kerr Stadium. Roanoke and head coach Scott Allison will be playing in the championship game for the ninth time in school history. They are 6-2 in championship games, losing both to Virginia Wesleyan (1990-91). Allison is one win away from #260 for his career.
With the win, the Maroons improved to 25-9-2 in the series against the Tigers, including a 2-0 decision earlier this year. Roanoke will look to win its ninth ODAC title, and its fifth since 2001 this weekend. With the win, the Maroons are now 20-12 all-time in the ODAC Tournament and currently riding a five-match win streak.
Roanoke will host Virginia Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium in the ODAC Championship match this Saturday. The Maroons are currently, 14-19-1 all-time against the Marlins including the last three meetings. They defeated VWC, 2-1 in double-overtime in the ODAC Semifinals in Virginia Beach and 3-0 in this year's meeting. Game time is at 6 p.m.
