Both teams were regionally ranked coming into the game with Roanoke at No. 4 and the Monarchs earning the No. 8 spot. The Maroons are now 9-2-1 against the Monarchs, with the last two meetings decided in overtime. It's the fourth-straight win for RC in the series.
Methodist's Eric McGinnis scored the first goal of the game with just 23-seconds left in the first half as he blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the goal.
Roanoke came back and put the Monarchs on their heels in the second half and evened the score with a Jake Mercer (Raleigh, NC, St. David's ) header off of a free kick from Johnny Hughes (Salem, VA, Salem) in the 75th minute. The Maroons held off the Monarchs in the final 15-minutes of play to force the extra period. The goal was Mercers' second of his career, while Hughes dished out his first assist of the season.
Just 12-seconds into overtime, AJ Tierce (Vorrhees, NJ, Eastern) capitalized on a Methodist defensive miscue to slip in the game-winning goal to the far post from the right side. It was his third goal of the season.
MU outshot RC, 11-5, including 6-3 in shots on goal. The Monarchs also held an 8-5 corner kicks advantage.
Methodist's Kyle Beach played the first 83 minutes before Patrick Hamel finished in goal with one save. Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA, Nelson County) had five stops for Roanoke.
The men will travel to Guilford on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in ODAC action. The Maroons are 24-5-1 all-time against the Quakers. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
