Men's Soccer Raises over $1,500 for Micah's Backpack in Goal-A-Thon on Friday
SALEM - The Roanoke College men's soccer team hosted and participated in the 1st annual Goal-a-Thon on Friday night in Kerr Stadium to benefit Micah's Backpack.

During the Goal-a-Thon, the men's soccer team was divided into teams of five players. They played organized, timed, “small-sided,” six-on-six games at the Kerr Stadium field until a combined total of 100 goals was scored. Over the past two months, the players took donations of $0.25 per goal scored. The Maroons were able to raise over $3,000, half of which will be donated to Micah's Backpack.

Micah's Backpack addresses children's hunger issues by partnering with local schools to provide direct assistance to students and families who qualify for the free lunch program. Each week during the school year, the identified students receive a backpack filled with enough food for the weekend. The backpacks include two dinners, two lunches and two breakfasts. Weekly, nearly 70 volunteers from various academic, civic, and religious groups work together building community while packing the backpacks and the partner schools distribute the backpacks to the students

Johnny Hughes scored the first goal of the event at 8:03 PM. It took two hours and one minute to score the 100th goal as Conner McBane netted the final goal of the fundraiser at 10:04 PM. The winner of the “golden boot” award of the night was Grant McAvann who tallied 11 goals. Michael Perry won the “golden gloves” award, allowing the fewest of the 100 goals scored on the night. The team consisting of Perry, McBane, Hughes, Chris Fisher, Patrick Bain, Spencer Martin and Tyler Carbaugh finished the evening with the most head to head victories.

The Maroons return to action in spring games this week. They will face off against VMI in Lexington, VA on Thursday, then compete in the Roanoke College Alumni Game at 8:00 PM on Friday in Kerr Stadium.
