Score: Eastern Mennonite 1, Roanoke 0
Records: Roanoke 6-4-1, 2-1-1 ODAC / Eastern Mennonite 3-7-0, 1-2-0 ODAC
The Lead: Eastern Mennonite got a first-half goal from Juan Luna and was able to hold off a furious Roanoke offensive attack to score a rain soaked 1-0 ODAC victory in men's soccer action on Friday night.
How it Happened:
- Roanoke controlled the play in the first-half outshooting EMU 8-3 in the first 45 minutes, but EMU keeper Daniel Nyce was forced to make just one save.
- Luna picked up his goal in the 39th minute when his shot was able to get past a screened Cole Sinclair to give EMU the lone goal of the match.
- RC continued to apply the offensive pressure from the outset of the second half. RC had several point blank opportunities including Robby Lentine who took a crossing pass from Cole Thornton and one timed a shot that was kicked away by Nyce with 17 minutes to play.
- Thornton then had a chance of his own just minutes later when an EMU defender misplayed a ball in the box which Thornton collected the ball and rifled a right-footed shot that was turned away by Nyce.
- The Maroons held a 22-5 edge in shots and 18-1 in corner kicks. In all, Nyce finished with seven saves including six in the second-half to preserve the EMU victory.
- Friday's loss marks the first regular season ODAC defeat for Roanoke since 2013, a span of 14 matches that saw RC go 12-0-2 during that time.
Roanoke will be off until Oct. 10 when it will host Bridgewater at 7:00 p.m.
