The Lead: Messiah topped Roanoke 2-1 in the opening match of the 2016 season for both teams.

How it Happened

  • After a back and forth start to the first-half, Messiah got on the board with 23 minutes left in the opening stanza when Colby Thomas collected a loose ball from a failed clear in front of the net and scored to put the Falcons up 1-0.
  • Messiah doubled its lead in the 56th minute when Kirby Robbins collected a rebound following a great save by Maroons keeper Nick Tadros and chipped it into the goal to make it 2-0.
  • The Maroons made it 2-1 with 11 seconds to go in the match when Fortune Sibanda set up Cole Thornton who headed the ball into the back of the net.
  • Messiah held a 13-9 edge in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Tadros made four stops in net for RC, while Connor Bell made three saves.  

Up Next: Roanoke will take on NC Wesleyan Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the invational's final match. NCWC lost to Lynchburg 2-0 in the first match Friday.
