ROANOKE MEN'S SOCCER ALUMNI QUESTION & ANSWER

BRYANT GOULD '72

Where are you originally from?

I am originally from Baltimore, Md. I moved to Houston, Texas in 1980 and have called Houston home since, except for some time in England.

Why did you choose to attend Roanoke College?

In 1968 when I was looking for a college to attend and the world was very different from what it is now. I went to a small high school and wanted a small liberal arts college where I could play soccer and lacrosse. I wanted a degree in business and Roanoke had the best programs of the school I looked at. Roanoke also had one of the best soccer programs.

Where are you now/what are you doing?

I am retired from the oil industry. I worked 43 years in the industry mostly as a crude oil trader for various refining companies. In retirement I hunt and fish and have a vegetable garden. During tax season I work for H&R Block.

Last time you touched a soccer ball/where?

Well I have an old ball in the backyard so probably last week sometime. As far as playing it was probably around 2000 when I was 50, I was playing for BP's industrial league team here in Houston.

Highlight/favorite soccer memory from your time at Roanoke?

There are just too many great memories to pick just one. The culture/comradery of the soccer team has to be my favorite highlight. I arrived on campus not really knowing anyone. I joined the soccer team and had instant friends most of them upper classmen which made the transition to college life much easier for me than for some of my other freshmen friends who did not have the support of a team like the 1968 soccer team.

When is the last time you were back on campus? Do you get back often?

I don't get back to campus very often. The last time would have been for an alumni weekend most likely for my 40th reunion year.  I am planning on coming back for my 50th reunion.

Favorite non-soccer memory from your time at Roanoke?

My favorite non soccer memory at Roanoke College is best not repeated on the forum. Please remember the 60's and 70's were a pretty unusual time on college campuses across the country.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Retired guys really don't get asked this question.  I hope I am still enjoying my retirement in 10 years.  I am planning to  continue to travel and enjoy my vegetable garden.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

The greatest accomplishment is hard to define, is it scoring a game winning goal, completing a big business deal or climbing some mountain, I am not sure. What I am most proud of are my two sons Nick and Will.

What advice do you have for the current Maroons about life after college?

Your soccer experiences are life lessons which will help guide you through life.
