Men's Tennis goes 2-0 during make-up matches, drops to CNU

Roanoke College men's tennis fared well in the two make-up ODAC matches vs. Lynchburg (6-3 W) and Randolph (9-0), winning both and improved to 4-1 in the conference. Today they fell to Christopher Newport, 6-3 and now are 4-5 on the season.
The Maroons have won three-straight and four of their last five games after starting the season, 0-3. The two conference wins now puts Roanoke in a three-way tie for second in the ODAC.
The men won in straight sets over Randolph, 9-0 in ODAC tennis action Friday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 0-9 overall, 0-6 in the ODAC. After winning all six singles victories, the Maroons swept their opposition in doubles competition.
On Wednesday, Roanoke defeated Lynchburg, 6-3 in what was their closet margin of victory this spring. The Maroons won singles matches one-through-four and the #1 and #2 doubles matches over the Hornets, who now dropped to 1-10 overall, 1-4 in ODAC competition.
Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad dropped Roanoke, 6-3, Saturday morning. In doubles play, Shulman and Nelson (CNU) defeated Roy and Sherrill 8-5; Brown and Sison (CNU) defeated DeWitt and Jordan 8-1 at No. 2; and Lyons and Rogers defeated Braig and Whaling (CNU) 8-5.
The Captains, who are 5-9 on the season, are better than their record indicates, as they have played seven teams ranked among the top-30 in NCAA Div. III, including against NCAA Div. I-member Old Dominion. They were ranked in the top-25 nationally and defeated ODAC-member Hampden-Sydney, 6-3 on March 7. The Tigers were ranked #13 in the ITA Atlantic South Region poll. The win was the first since March 20, breaking a four-game skid.
In singles, Eric Shulman (CNU), ranked eighth in the ITA Atlantic South Region in singles, defeated
Jon Roy 6-0, 7-5 in #1 singles. In #2 singles, Dusty Nelson (CNU) defeated Sam Sherrill 6-4, 6-4; Martin Brown (CNU) upended Drew Rodgers 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3; John Briag (CNU) defeated Sam Jordan 6-0, 6-3; Pete DeWitt defeated Dylan Young (CNU) 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 5; and Alex Lyons defeated Chris Yost (CNU) 7-5, 7-5.
The men will host Bridgewater on Tuesday, April 7 on campus with the matched scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Eagles are 7-4 overall and are tied with the Maroons for second in the conference with a 5-1 mark.
