Gholson, Long Break Records in 47-39 Win over Eastern Mennonite
HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) and Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)each broke career records in a 47-39 win over Eastern Mennonite Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 11-2 overall, 8-1 in the ODAC. The Royals dropped to 10-3, 6-3 in conference play.

Long scored a three-pointer early in the second half to become the 15th player at Roanoke to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. She now has 1,004 career points while her 155 three-pointers rank her second all-time.

Gholson's three blocked shots this afternoon made her the career blocks leader, passing Megan Harrigan (Fairport, NY, Fairport)'99 with 142. She finished the afternoon with 10 points and eight rebounds along with her three blocks.

Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley)had 13 points and four steals to lead Roanoke. Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)dished out three assists along with five points and four rebounds. Lindsay Skaff (Charleston, WV, Charleston Catholic)hit two three-pointers for six points on the afternoon.

Addie Bashorun and Marla Young each finished with seven points to lead Eastern Mennonite. Brittany Snyder and Miranda Wolfe each added six points.

Porter helped her team on the defensive end, as Roanoke outscored EMU, 20-7 in points off turnovers. As a team, the Maroons held the Royals to 28.3% shooting on the afternoon.

Roanoke pushed out to a 17-10 lead at the 10:58 mark before the game slowed down. The Royals methodically used a 14-4 run to grab a 24-21 lead after a Miranda Wolfe jumper with 2:07 left in the half. The Maroons scored the next five, however, and were up at halftime, 26-24.

The scoring became even lower in the second half. But EMU continued to grit out play and tied the game at 31-31 after a Marla Young fast-break layup with 10:59 left in the contest.

Roanoke broke the tie first, however, scoring eight straight to retake a 39-31 lead. The Royals couldn't find the basket enough to make a charge in the final minutes as they took the 47-39 loss.

The women return to action Tuesday, Jan. 19 back in Harrisonburg to take on Bridgewater. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Nininger Hall.
