Roanoke Leads Big Early, Defeats Randolph 63-38 in ODAC Play
SALEM – The Roanoke Women's Basketball team jumped out to an early lead, which they held for the remainder of their 63-38  win over Randolph College, on Friday night.
 
Roanoke moves to 6-14, 6-10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action, while the Wildcats' fall to 3-19, 0-17 ODAC.
 
With this win, Roanoke holds an 11 game winning streak over Randolph College. 
 
Randolph jumped on the board early as Brianna Lowry made the opening basket of the contest to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Roanoke wasn't as quick to respond as the next basket of the game came at the 15:51 mark when Kayla Lemke dropped in a layup to tie the game at 2-2.  The Maroons made up for lost time, by going on a 16-3 run over the next five minutes.  This run included six more points from Lemke and four from Tatum McKee.  With 9:37 to play, Roanoke was ahead 18-5.
 
With 7:00 to play in the first half, the Maroons were still ahead 18-9, but rattled off another 10-3 run that took the clock to the final minute of the half.   In that run, the Maroons' leading scorer, Paxton Gwin, tallied four points.  Roanoke entered the locker room ahead 28-14.
 
Coming out for the second stanza, the Maroons kept the heat on as they had in the first, opening in a 11-2 run that five points from Gwin and two from McKee.  With 14:20 to play in the game, Roanoke held a 39-16 lead.
 
Just a few minutes later Meghan Gadell knocked down a trey and followed it up with a layup.  This extended the Maroon lead to 24, 44-20.
 
Over the next seven minutes, Roanoke held on to this lead, leading 56-30 with 3:41 to play.  With 1:45 to play Gadell knocked down her second three-pointer to put the Maroons ahead 59-36.
 
As the final buzzer sounded, Roanoke was victorious 63-38.
 
McKee, Gadell and Duggins all led the Maroons with 10 points each, while Duggins recorded a team-high eight rebounds.  Gadell finished a perfect 4-4 from the field including 2-2 from behind the arc.
 
For Randolph, Bonnie Bishop led with a team-high 12 points, and Chelsea Tyler pulled down eight rebounds.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 11th as they go on the road to face Hollins in ODAC action.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
