Women Fall to Guilford 61-49 on Wednesday Night
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in ODAC action on Wednesday evening, 61-49 to Guilford College in the Bast Center. The Maroons now have a record of 7-15, 3-10 in the ODAC, while the Quakers are 14-8, 8-5 in ODAC play.

The Maroons were held to single-digit scoring for all players on the squad in tonight's contest. Kanisha Wiley and Meghan Gadell led the Maroons with nine points each. Gadell went 3-6 from the field, including a 3-5 mark from behind the arc. Wiley was 4-6 from the floor, and finished with a team-high seven rebounds, trying Markia Beckwith in the category. Cary Beahm finished with eight points, which ends a 13-game streak of scoring in double-figures for the sophomore. Beahm still ranks second in the ODAC in total points (386) and points per game (17.5).

Roanoke got on the board first with a pair of free throws from Anna Carter, while the Quakers answered with a three-pointer to take a quick lead. Meghan Gadell followed suit with a trey of her own, reclaiming the lead for the Maroons. Lauren Ramsey and Kali Cuttaia went on a 6-0 run for Guilford, taking a 9-5 advantage in the first three minutes. Gadell stroked another three-pointer for the Maroons to get back within one. After two minutes of scoreless action, Cary Beahm broke the drought with a layup and a Roanoke 10-9 lead. Guilford went on another run, this time 9-0 spurred by a three pointer by Brittany Drew. Seven minutes into the game, Guilford led 18-10.

Roanoke answered the Guilford run with an 8-0 run of its own, led by Kanisha Wiley with four points. Roanoke tied the game at 18-18 with 9:26 to play. Jamie Ellis and Haven Walter each hit three pointers for Guilford, taking a six point lead, but Beckwith hit her own three pointer with 4:31 left in the half to get within one point, 26-25. Roanoke got within one point again with 39 seconds to play with a Bridget Holleran jumper, but Alex Payne hit a three with 10 seconds left for Guilford to enter the locker room ahead 31-27 at half.

Guilford held Roanoke to just two points in the first five minutes of the half, going on a 7-2 run during that span. Meghan Gadell stopped the scoreless streak with another three-pointer, her third of the evening, to get the Maroons back within six, 38-32. Heaven Walters scored five unanswered points for the Quakers taking an 11-point, 45-34 lead with 12:03 left in the game. Roanoke mounted a comeback, as Beahm and Holleran made baskets while Hannah Ward scored on an old-fashioned three-point play to get within six, 47-41 with 10 minutes remaining. After another two minute scoreless span for each team, Guilford's Brittany Drew hit a three to put the Quakers ahead by nine. Over the next five minutes, Roanoke was held to just three points, all from free throws, while the Quakers held a 10-point lead. Kanisha Wiley scored the final five points for the Maroons, but Guilford's lead, which was at 14-points at its peak, proved too large for a late Maroon comeback. Roanoke fell 61-49 in the Bast Center on Wednesday.

The Quakers were led by Lauren Ramsey, who finished 5-12 from the field for a total of 16 points. Heaven Walters also finished in double-figures, putting up 10 points on 4-5 shooting. Anais Weatherly led the Quakers in rebounding, pulling down eight boards in the contest. Kali Cuttaia finished with six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Roanoke outshot the Quakers 37.3 to 35.5 percent from the field, while Guilford held a 60.0 to 36.4 percent advantage from behind the arc. Roanoke held a three rebound lead over the Quakers (39-36), but Guilford led in assists 14-12.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 14th as they play host to Randolph College in the Bast Center. The contest, which is scheduled as Senior Day for four of the Roanoke College women's basketball team, is set for a 1:00 PM tip-off.
