The Lead: Ferrum got a combined 56 points from Zarkia Mattox and Erin March to score an 84-73 opening night win over Roanoke on Tuesday.
How it Happened
- Bridget Holleran led RC with 22 points in the loss. Cary Beahm added 21 points, while Chris Martin came off the bench to score 13 points.
- Ferrum got 31 points and 13 rebounds from Zarkia Mattox in the victory. Erin March scored 24 points and Maggie Self scored 15 points for the Panthers.
- RC shot 37.3% for the game, making 28-of-75 shots from the floor. Ferrum shot 46.2%, knocking down 24-of-52 shots.
- The Maroons had four players, including three starters foul out of the game with Ferrum converting 31-of-42 attempts from the foul line. The Maroons went to the line just 18 times, making 11.
- Down 30-22, RC went on 10-0 run taking the lead at 32-30 following a pair of free-throws from Beahm. An Allison Livengood basket pushed the Roanoke lead to 36-32 with just over three minutes left in the half.
- The Panthers responded with a 10-0 run of its own and took a 42-36 lead into the intermission following a bucket by Mattox with 22 seconds to go.
- Ferrum was able to build a 10 point third quarter lead with five minutes to go. Beahm connected on jumper to make it 56-48 and spark what would be a 10-3 run to close quarter with Molly Hassell draining a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 59-56.
- After a Martin jumper made the score 63-61 Panthers with seven minutes to go in the game, Ferrum reeled off nine straight points to take a 72-61 advantage to put the game away.
