Eastern Mennonite Holds Off RC Women's Hoops 65-59

The Lead: Eastern Mennonite earned a 65-59 ODAC Women's Basketball win over Roanoke in the league opener for the Maroons Tuesday night.

How it Happened:

  • Cary Beahm led Roanoke with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Molly Hassell and Bridget Holleran each had 13 points for RC which shot 35.7% for the game, making 25-of-70 shots.
  • Chloe Roach and Lexi Deffenbaugh both had 13 points for Eastern Mennonite, while Chrissy Delwder chipped in with 12 points off the bench to help EMU to a 14-6 edge over the Maroon reserves.
  • The Maroons jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Holleran jumper two minutes into the game. EMU battled back, eventually tying the game at 11 before RC scored the final four points to take a 15-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Roanoke maintained the lead to start the second quarter, pushing its advantage to six points on a Chris Martin jumper with four minutes to go in the half. EMU scored the next eight points and pulled ahead 25-23 with 34 seconds to go. Hassell would then send RC back in front with a three-pointer to make the score 26-25 at the half.
  • Beahm opened the second-half scoring with a jumper to push RC to a 28-25 lead before the Royals went on an 11-0 run, taking a 36-28 lead on a Delwder three-pointer with seven minutes to go. EMU finished the third quarter by outscoring RC 21-11 to lead 46-37 heading into the fourth.
  • Down 51-42 with just over eight minutes to play, RC rallied and was able to chip away and cut the EMU lead to two at 59-57 following a Holleran basket with 54 seconds to play. Holleran had a chance for a three-point play but missed the free-throw and EMU was able to get the defensive rebound.
  • The Royals then knocked down 6-of-8 free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.
