The Lead: Virginia Wesleyan got 37 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter from Jayla Harris to help the Marlins slip past Roanoke 77-68.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke was led by Cary Beahm who scored 25 points for the Maroons. Allison Livengood scored 14 points, while Chris Martin chipped in with 11 and Bridget Holleran had nine points.
  • Harris was 10-of-24 from the field and 11-of-12 from the foul line. NiAsia Caldwell was the only other Marlin in double-figures with 12 points.
  • Roanoke was 23-of-58 (39.7%) from the floor, while VWC was 23-of-67 (34.3%) from the field.
  • The Maroons led 15-12 after the first quarter then opened the second quarter with a 19-3 run, taking a 34-15 lead with 4:09 to go in the first half following a pair of free-throws from Beahm.
  • VWC then scored 13 of the final 16 points of the half to trim its deficit to 37-28 at the intermission.
  • A Livengood three-pointer put RC up 44-30 with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • Roanoke led 53-38 with under a minute to go in the third quarter before an Amanda Gerni three-pointer closed the quarter and sparked what would prove to be a 19-5 run that was capped by a Harris jumper that made it 58-57 RC with five minutes to go in the game.
  • A basket by Beahm and a Molly Hassell free-throw made it 61-57 with 3:23 to play in the game.
  • Virginia Wesleyan made back-to-back baskets to take a 62-61 lead before a Holleran free-throw tied it at 62-62 with 2:31 to play.
  • Beahm made the score 65-64 VWC with 1:30 to go, but Harris would make nine free-throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Marlins.
