The Basics
Score: Roanoke 61 | Washington and Lee 52
Records: Maroons 5-1 / 3-1 ODAC |  Generals 1-1 / 1-1 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College women's basketball team played host to Washington and Lee on Friday night to kick off a four game home stand. The Maroons have started February by winning two consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games and looked to make it three straight against a Generals team that was playing just their second game of the 2020-21 season. The Maroons controlled the game for most of the night building as much as a 15 point advantage. A late Generals rally cut it to four, but Roanoke hit their free throws to seal the ODAC win, 61-52.

How it Happened:

  • Washington and Lee would strike first hitting a three-pointer off the jump ball win but Renee Alquiza would answer with a triple of her own.
  • Another make from long range would once again see the Generals in front. However, a Kristina Harrel free throw and JaBryah Haverkamp jump shot would tie the game at 8-8.
  • Haverkamp scored again, and Roanoke had their first lead of the night. Ana Dorta scored from long range as the lead traded hands again.
  • With the clock winding down, Alquiza laid the ball in for a one-point lead after the first period of play.
  • Alquiza would score four of the next eight points to stake Roanoke to a five-point lead. After a W&L layup, neither team would score for the next two and a half minutes. Megan Horn would tie the game at 18-18 with just under six minutes left before the half.
  • Sayre Brandstatter broke the tie and sparked the Maroons to an 11-4 surge to close the half and take a seven point advantage into the locker room.
  • The third quarter would belong to the Maroons. With 5:30 left in the frame, another Alquiza three ball would give Roanoke their first double digit lead of the night, 38-27.
  • Haverkamp would push the advantage to 12 and three straight by Harrel extended the RC lead to 15, their largest of the game.
  • W&L hit a three, but four straight by Rose Sande would see Roanoke take a 50-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Roanoke would keep their 14 point advantage until the six minute mark, when the Generals mounted a rally. Three minutes later, Washington and Lee had completed a 10-0 run to make it a four-point game, 54-50, with three minutes to play.
  • Alquiza went two for two from the stripe and Ayanna Scarborough hit a jumper to stretch the lead back to eight with just over a minute left to play.
  • Alquiza and Sande would go 3-4 from the foul line to put the game away and give the Maroons their third straight ODAC win.
  • Alquiza finished with a career high 23 points, including 7-9 from the free throw line and 2-3 from long range. The junior would add a team high nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Sande added 12 points and six rebounds with Harrel and Haverkamp each netting six.
  • Jordan Diehl and Horn scored 12 with Erin Hughes (10) giving Washington and Lee three double figure scorers. Diehl added 10 rebounds.

Up next: After playing four of their first five games on the road, Roanoke will play host to Southern Virginia on Tuesday night in the second of four straight games in the Cregger Center. The game with the Knights is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
