The Lead: The Roanoke women's basketball team kicked off the 2021 post-season by hosting Shenandoah in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Hornets would race out to a 12-2 lead before the Maroons stormed back to pull away for their third win over Shenandoah this season.
How it Happened:
- Shenandoah wasted little time in getting the scoring started with a 5-0 run after the opening tip. The Hornets would push their edge to double digits, 12-2, at the mid-way mark of the first quarter.
- After a RC timeout, JaBryah Haverkamp hit two free throws and a jump shot as the Maroons trimmed the deficit to six.
- Roanoke would trail by eight heading into the final minute of the period and a Kristina Harrel layup made it 19-13.
- With 3:52 left before the half, Rose Sande buried a three-pointer to give Raonoke their first lead of the evening, 23-22.
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Whitney Hopson and Sande pushed the advantage to eight.
- Two Harrel free throws pushed the lead to 10 and after a Hornet score, Sayre Brandstatter dialed up one from distance capping a 22-5 second quarter.
- The Maroons would hit nine of the 14 field goal attempts in a third period that would see the lead grow to 20.
- The Hornets would get as close as 15 in the final quarter but a Sande jumper and two more free throws by Harrel would close out the 74-58 win and advance the Maroons to the semifinals.
- Sande came off the bench to score a career high 21 points with Morgan Micallef adding 12. Ayanna Scarborough grabbed eight rebounds while Hopson handed out five assists.
Up next: Roanoke will host the #9 seeded Ferrum Panthers on Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
