The Lead: The Roanoke College women's basketball team ushered in 2022 with a visit from Hood College on Sunday afternoon. The game with the Blazers is a makeup of a previously postponed contest from mid-November. The Maroons used a 22-0 run in the opening quarter to seize control as they cruised to the non-conference victory, 84-41.
How it Happened:
- Morgan Micallef scored a layup followed by a Kristina Harrel jump shot to stake the Maroons to a 4-3 advantage.
- Over the next six and a half minutes, RC would not allow the Blazers to score as Roanoke scored 22 consecutive points, including a pair of 3-pointers and eight points by Rose Sande.
- A Lauren Keel layup followed by another hoop by Micallef and the lead would grow to 43-13, with just over one-minute left before the half.
- Whitney Hopson hit a three ahead of a layup by JaBryah Haverkamp and when a three-ball from Brynlee Burrill found the bottom of the net, the Roanoke lead had grown to 40 points, 63-23.
- A pair of made free throws by Ayanna Scarborough gave the Maroon their largest lead of the afternoon, 82-37, and when the final horn sounded, the Maroons had gotten the new year off to a good start with an 84-41 win.
- Sande had a game high 18 points and four rebounds off the bench while Micallef finished with 16 and a joined Lauren Keel with a team-high seven boards. Hopson finished with 12 points and five assists. Harrel had six of the Maroon's 23 helpers.
