- The Short Story: Roanoke outscored the Fighting Squirrels in every quarter en route to a season-opening win over Mary Baldwin on Friday evening in Staunton, 96-58. Freshmen Madison Nereu scored a game-high 24 points in her collegiate debut while Rose Sande started the season with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seven different Maroons scored in the first quarter led by Lauren Keel's five points. Mary Baldwin scored the first points of the game just six seconds into the first quarter before going on a scoring drought of 7:21 while the Maroons scored 19-straight points to take a 19-4 lead with just over two and a half minutes left in the first period.
- With a 23-5 lead heading into the second quarter, the Maroons kept MBU at bay, not allowing them to get closer than 12, and leading by as many as 22. Nereu scored 13 of her 24 in the second quarter.
- The third quarter saw the Maroons continue to extend their lead outscoring the Fighting Squirrels 27-13. Nereu added seven points in the quarter. Roanoke jumped out in the half scoring the first 10 points before MBU made a basket with 6:11 left in the period.
- Roanoke continued to outscore MBU in the fourth quarter, led by Nora Schroeder's six points.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Roanoke shot 41.4% from the field while making 23 of 34 free throws. The Maroons had a +2 assists-to-turnover ration (18-16) while forcing 39 turnovers by the Fighting Squirrels.
- The Maroon bench outscored MBU's 68-12.
- The largest lead for Roanoke was 38 with 5:24 left in the game. The Maroons led for all but the first 2:47 of the game.
