Maroons Remain Undefeated With 72-50 Win Over Hood in Florida

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 72-50 win over the Hood Blazers at the Dayton Beach Shootout 2022 in Dayton Beach, Fla. Morgan Micallef led all scorers with 15 points and Madison Nereu had the game-high seven rebounds in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hood took a very early lead of 5-2 with 8:14 left in the first quarter. However, that was the last lead they would have in the contest with Roanoke going on a 12-0 run before the Blazers scored again. Another run, this time 10-0, helped the Maroons to a 22-7 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • The Maroons led by as many as 21 midway through the second quarter at 33-12 with just over five minutes left in before halftime. The Blazers pulled within 12 after going on a 9-0 run with just over three minutes left, but two free throws each for Peyton Kirchner and Sayre Brandstatter put the lead back up to 18 with 45 seconds left before the break. Two quick baskets by Hood pulled them within 13 at the intermission 39-26.
  • The Maroons kept the Blazers at bay by 12 or 13 points for most of the third quarter before a late free throw by JaBryah Haverkamp gave Roanoke the 54-39 lead heading into the final quarter.  
  • Roanoke kept the Blazers scoreless for the first 2:11 of the final period while scoring six to jump out to a 21-point lead at 60-39. The Maroons had held Hood scoreless going back to 1:59 of the third quarter for a total of four minutes and 10 seconds while scoring 11. Roanoke extended their lead to as many as 24 late in the fourth quarter before settling in for the 72-50 win over the Blazers.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 39.2% from the field while holding the Blazers to just 28.6%.
  • The Maroons led in rebounds (51-40), points off turnovers (35-8), second-chance points (14-8), points in the paint (42-16), and bench points (36-15).
  • In addition to Micallef's 15, Kirchner finished with 14 points and Brandstatter had 11. Nine different Maroons scored against Hood while 12 different Roanoke players pulled down at least one rebound.
