Big Second Half Pushes Maroons to 66-46 Win Over Eastern

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team was tied at 23-23 at the half with Eastern but outscored the visitors from Pennsylvania by 20 in the second half to claim a 66-46 win over the Eagles in the first game of the 2022 Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic. JaBryah Haverkamp led Roanoke in scoring with 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Roanoke jumped out to a 10-5 lead with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. After 15 combined points in four minutes, the two teams combined for just seven before the end of the quarter with the Maroons having a 14-8 lead.
  • The second quarter was the opposite in scoring from the first with the Eagles taking a 23-21 lead with just 24 seconds left before halftime. However, a layup by Haverkamp with four seconds remaining tied the score up at 23-23.
  • A layup by the Eagles with 6:37 left in the third quarter gave the visitors their biggest lead at five at 33-28. Two and a half minutes later Lauren Keel made a pair of free throws to give the Maroons the lead at 34-33, but Eastern retook the lead just 20 seconds later. It was the last lead the Eagles would have. Over the final 3:47 of the third quarter, the Maroons went on a 10-3 run to take a 43-38 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The fourth quarter was not friend to Eastern as scored just eight points in the 10 minutes while the Maroons matched their 23 from the entire first half to pull away for the 66-46 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke shot 34.4% from the field but held the Eagles to just 28.8%. Both teams made three, three-pointers on the evening.
  • A key difference was that Roanoke went to the line 32 times, making 21 while the Eagles attempted just 15 free throws, making just nine.
  • Roanoke led Eastern in rebounds (52-41), assists (7-5), points in the paint (32-24), fastbreak points (13-0), and bench points (38-1).
  • Lauren Keel nearly had a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds, the game-high.
