The Lead: The No. 25 Roanoke women's lacrosse team showed why they are one of the top teams in the country on Saturday with a 14-4 win over No. 19 Denison in both programs' season opener.
How it Happened:
- Grace Koutouzis opened up scoring for the Maroons this season with a goal just over five and a half minutes into the game at 9:28 off an assist from Lilly Blair. The Big Red answered right back just 30 seconds later to level the match at 1-1. However, the Maroons went on a 3-0 scoring run to close out the first quarter with a goal each by Blair, Koutouzis, and Libby Bowman.
- Maddie Stopkoski gave the Maroons a 5-1 lead a little more than a minute into the second quarter. After Denison got back within three, the Maroons added another goal right before the half to lead 6-2 at the break.
- The third and four quarters were identical to the first from a scoring perspective with Roanoke adding four goals in each to just one for the home team as the Maroons held on for the 10-goal win over a nationally-ranked team.
By the Numbers:
- Kyleigh Chickering made six saves against the 10 shots she faced while playing all 60 minutes in goal to earn her first win of the season.
- Koutouzis and Bowman led the Maroons with five goals apiece with Koutouzis adding two assists and Bowman adding one.
- The Maroons went 26-28 on clear attempts while leading the Big Red in shots (27-13), ground balls (18-12), and free position shots (2-0).
Up Next: Roanoke will be back on campus on Sunday, February 26 when they host St. Mary's (Md.) in their home opener. The first draw control is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Kerr Stadium.
