The Lead: The Roanoke wrestling team sent wrestlers to a pair of tournaments over the weekend with several reaching the podiums against some of the top regionally and nationally ranked opponents. The Maroons were represented at the 2023 Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton and also the 2023 Ken Ober Memorial Tournament hosted by Elizabethtown.

Pete Wilson Highlights:
- 125 lbs. – Mac Cafurello won his opening round match before dropping one in the second round. He rebounded to win six straight including four regionally ranked and one nationally ranked opponent to finish third.
- 141 lbs. – Mahlic Sallah went a perfect 5-0 to win the title at 184 lbs. He opened with a pair of falls before defeating the #4 wrestler in the Mid-East region in the quarter finals in a major decision and the #5 in the Central region by a 6-1 decision. In the title match, he won a 5-2 decision over the #6 nationally/#3 Upper Midwest region 5-2.
Ken Ober Highlights:
- 125 lbs. – Roanoke had a pair of wrestlers reach the podium with Jude Robson (3rd) and Josh Noble (5th).
- 149 lbs. – Andru Boyd finished third after winning in the first sudden victory period (3-1) over Christian Johnson-Hunte of Shenandoah.
- 157 lbs. – Two Maroons faced off in the fifth-place match with Andrew McDougal winning by 7-4 decision over William Kennedy, as both wrestlers reached the podium.
- 165 lbs. – This weight class also saw two Maroons reaching the podium with Jack Bobeck finishing third going 3-1 on the weekend with Jacob Cherry finishing fifth with a 4-2 record.
- 197 lbs. – Cam Cavins finished on the podium in fifth place after winning by major decision in the 5th place match over Ezekiel Gayle of McDaniel
Next Up:
- The Maroons remain on the road this week as they travel just south of Roanoke to Ferrum for an ODAC dual against the Panthers on Thursday, February 2. First match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
