The Basics:
Score: Maroons 117 - Third Place
Event: 2023 ODAC Tournament
Location: Winchester, Va.
The Lead: Corey Messick and Mahlic Sallah won individual titles as the Roanoke wrestling team finished third at the 2023 ODAC Tournament. Overall the Maroons had a top-four finisher in nine of the 10 weight classes.
RC highlights:
- 125 lbs. – Mac Cafurello went 3-1 with a third-place finish.
- 133 lbs. – Messick won the title after going 3-0 with an 8-7 win over David Rubin of W&L in the final.
- 141 lbs. – Dustin Smith finished fourth after going 1-2.
- 149 lbs. – Nick Young went 1-2 with a fourth-place finish.
- 157 lbs. – After a 3-1 finish, Zane Cox reached the podium in third place.
- 165 lbs. – Jacob Cherry fell in the title match by a 7-5 decision to finish runner-up.
- 174 lbs. – Kyle Lee finished third with a 2-1 record.
- 184 lbs. - Sallah won the inaugural title at 184 lbs. with a 6-2 decision over Khalil Mitchell of Averett in the final.
- 197 lbs. – Wyatt Sage earned a spot on the podium after earning a fall in the third-place match.
- 285 lbs. – Jackson Shumate dropped a pair of matches at 285 lbs.
Up next: The Maroons will next host the 2022 Star City Classic on Sunday, November 20 at the Cregger Field House on campus.
