Roanoke Offense Comes Alive in Win over Ferrum

Salem, Va. --- The offense finally came alive for the Maroons as Roanoke defeated Ferrum, 5-1 this evening at Kerr Stadium. The women improve to 2-2-1 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 0-3.

The Maroons dominated the night for the start, with a 23-4 shot advantage and 5-0 on corner kicks. The Maroons played a physical contest with 11 fouls called to the Panthers two for the match. Roanoke led 4-0 at the half and never looked back as they scored more goals tonight than in all four games combined this season.

Meredith Grunewald was the highlight of the night, scoring two goals along with an assist to lead Roanoke. With the assist, she tied the school-record in that category. She needs three more points to enter the top-10 all-time at Roanoke (70).

Newcomer Paige Gaeng got her first assist of the season to Grunewald to get the Maroons on the board early in the first half.

With Kristin McCoy's goal tonight she now moves into fourth all-time in career points (94) and sole possession of second all-time in career goals with 42.

Just before the half ended, Tami Alcalde came off the bench and scored her first goal of the season to give the Maroons a 4-0 advantage.

In the second half, Lindsay Hunt scored her first goal of her career to give the Maroons a 5-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

Ferrum's Gabby Dobbs prevented the shutout as she scored with just under a minute remaining in the match.

Katie Hodkinson finished with seven saves for Ferrum while Lindsay Kooiman and Jessica Pease each had a save apiece for the Maroons.

The women will return travel to Lexington, Va. to battle Washington & Lee in their road-opener. It will also be the Maroons ODAC-opener with game time slated for 1 p.m. Roanoke is 15-10-4 all-time against the Generals and swept them last year both by a score of, 2-1.
