Maroons Record Fifth Shutout in Win over Sweet Briar

SALEM, Va. --- Meredith Grunewald and Kristen McCoy each notched a pair of goals to help Roanoke to a 6-0 victory over Sweet Briar College on Wednesday evening. The Maroons improve to 6-6-2 overall, 4-2-1 in ODAC play. The Vixens fall to 2-9, 0-6.

The majority of the contest took place in Sweet Briar's defensive half as Roanoke's 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 formations kept play bottled near the Vixens' net. The Maroons allowed just two shots from distance, firing 35 attempts themselves at the SBC net.
After peppering the Vixens' net through first several minutes, Roanoke jumped on the board in quick succession with a pair of goals from Grunewald. The senior standout took a central pass from Jessica Welfare and slipped around the keeper before depositing the ball into the net. She found the mesh for a second time in the 20th minute with a chip of the SBC goalie after Alexa Mislitski bypassed the Sweet Briar defense with a lofted ball over top to an on-rushing Grunewald. The scores marked Grunewald's ninth and 10th goals of the season.
McCoy notched her first tally of the game in the 30th minute, giving Welfare her second helper of the night. McCoy followed 12 minutes later with the Maroons' fourth goal of the half and her seventh of the campaign off a pass fromTami Alcalde.
Grunewald added her sixth and seventh assists of the season mid-way through the second half. She connected with Laura Kellam on the sophomore's first goal of her Maroons' career. Grunewald found Sara Farmer for the game's final goal in the 74th minute, giving the first year striker her first score of the year.
Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, October 18, as the Maroons welcome Eastern Mennonite University to Salem for an ODAC matchup. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
