Roanoke places three on VaSID Women's Soccer All-State Team
Roanoke had three players named to the VaSID Women's Soccer All-State Team announced this morning. Meredith Grunewald was selected to the first-team while Kristen McCoy and Jess Welfare garnered second-team honors.
Grunewald, an All-ODAC player and team captain, led the Maroons in points (47), goals (17) and assists (13) this season. She was also named VaSID First-Team All-State and was an NSCAA All-South Region selection for the second-striaght year. The senior midfielder finished second in shots (66), shots on goal (30) while her four game-winners led Roanoke. Her finest game of her career came in the regular-season finale against Randolph when she scored three goals and added three assists for nine points, all career-highs. This was her second-straight season on the first-team as she capped her brilliant career ranked in the top-10 at Roanoke in career points (3rd), goals (4th), assists (1st), game-winners (3rd), shots (8th) and shots on goal (5th). With the goal against Virginia Wesleyan in her final collegiate game, she broke the single-season scoring record with 47 points. Grunewald was ranked nationally (35th) in scoring and 15th in assists in Div. III.
McCoy, a senior forward and a three-time All-ODAC selection, finished the season with 11 goals and one assist for 23 points. The captain from Roanoke, Va. was named to the VaSID All-State team for the second-straight season. Her 67 shots and 36 shots on goal were second on the team in addition to her season goals and point total. She finished her storybook career ranked in the top-10 at Roanoke in points (2nd), goals (2nd), shots (2nd), shots on goal (2nd) and game-winners (2nd). The three-time first-team selection had two multi-goal games against Sweet Briar and Randolph. Her two game-winners came against Ferrum and Bridgewater in a 1-0 win.
Welfare, a sophomore midfielder who is a Two-time All-ODAC selection, had two goals and five assists for nine points on the season. She finished the year with 47 shots and 20 shots on goal, nearly half of them off headers. An NSCAA All-South Region selection, Welfare had two assists against Hollins and Sweet Briar. The Hidden Valley graduate had a goal against Emory & Henry and Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinals.
The Maroons finished 11-7-2, 8-2-1 in the ODAC. The women won six of their last seven games of the season as they finished fourth in the conference. Head Coach Phil Benne has 228 wins under his belt in 20 seasons at Roanoke. The three-time ODAC Coach of the Year is ranked among the top-25 all-time in Div. III in career wins. The Maroons have won at least 11 games for the fourth-straight year and the 15th time in program history.
