HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Roanoke need a late goal to slip past Eastern Mennonite, 2-1 Saturday afternoon in ODAC action. The Maroons improved to 9-5, 5-3 in the ODAC while the Royals dropped to 5-9, 2-6 in the conference.
Roanoke, which is now 9-3-1 against EMU, won its fourth-straight from the Royals. The Maroons out-shot their opponent, 23-8, including 13-4 in the second half. They also held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks in addition to a 16-4 shots on goal edge.
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)scored her team-best eighth goal of the season off a corner kick from Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield)to give them a 1-0 lead and held on through the first half with the one-goal lead.
Eastern Mennonite evened the score in the 61st minute as Christa Beckler scored off an assist from Kacie Ruark to make it 1-1 midway through the second half.
The Royals fouled in the box during the 79th minute as Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)scored her third goal of the year off a penalty kick to give the Maroons a 2-1 lead and held on for their ninth win of the season.
Adams had five shots, four on goal while Welfare finished with four, three on goal to lead the Maroons. McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)added three shots, two on goal whileLauren Schwarcz (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central)totaled three shots on the afternoon.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)got the win in goal for Roanoke, collecting three saves while EMU's Abby Diffenbach had 14 saves for the Royals.
The women will host Guilford College on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in ODAC action. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start.
