Roanoke tops Guilford, 3-0 in Women's Soccer
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Guilford, 3-0 in ODAC women's soccer action this afternoon at Kerr Stadium. With the win, the Maroons improved to 10-5 overall, 6-3 in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 7-10, 4-5 in conference play.
The Maroons, who are now 22-4 against the Quakers, won their third-straight match over their ODAC-foe. Roanoke out-shot Guilford, 19-6 with a 11-4 edge in shots on goal. They also held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )scored early for her first game-winner of the season as she scored off a cross that bent into the far right side to make it, 1-0 with just 1:36 into action.
In the second half, Cynthia Suttora (Fort Salonga, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Academy)scored her first goal of her career off a header from McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)to make it, 2-0 just three minutes in the half. Garst had her second assist of the match five minutes later as she found Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)at the top of the 18. Welfare scored her fifth goal of the year as both connected for the second time this season.
Welfare and Suttora each finished with four shots each as both had two and three shots on goal, respectively. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)totaled four saves on the afternoon, including her seventh shutout of the season.
Guilford was led by Bri Eilman with three shots, two on goal. Kat Adams had eight saves in goal for the Quakers.
With the win today, the 2009 senior class has four-straight 10-win seasons to their claim. For head coach Phil Benne, it's his 17th 10-win season and the 18th in the 25-year history of the program at Roanoke.
The women return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 to play against Randolph-Macon in their home regular season finale. It will be the final home match for seniors Alida Haslett, Margaret Houston and Gina Valles. The Maroons are 14-22-3 against the Yellow Jackets, winning the last four meetings. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
