Roanoke Defeated by Shenandoah in Finale of Roanoke Invitational

SALEM, Va--- Roanoke dropped a 2-1 decision to Shenandoah in the finale of the Roanoke Invitational Sunday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons fell to 0-1-2, while the Hornets improved to 1-2 on the year.

Shenandoah jumped out to an early lead when Hannah Oakes headed in a corner from Amber Womack just nine minutes into the contest. Brittany Mason added to the lead in the 35th minute off an unassisted goal from the middle of the box to send the Hornets into the half with a 2-0 lead.

Sarah Bradley (Richmond, VA, Deep Run) found Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) two minutes into the second stanza to cut the lead in half. The assist was the first of Bradley's career, she also contributed five shots, three on goal. Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield) chipped in with four shots, two on goal. With five saves on the day, Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View) moved into fifth on the all-time saves list at Roanoke with 159. She passed Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) and Jess Simmers (Dowington, PA, Villa Maria) on her way up the record books.

Kat Terza picked up her first win of the season in goal for Shenandoah, registering nine saves on the day.

The Maroons outshot the Hornets 22-14 and held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Roanoke will travel to the campus of Lynchburg College to take part in the Shellenberger Classic next weekend, Sept. 11-12. The Maroons will take on Maryville College at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and Salisbury University at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
